Dr David Johannes de Villiers grew up in Ficksburg in the Eastern Free State. He completed his medical degree MBChB at the University of the Free State in 2005. He then moved on to Gauteng where he completed his internship at One Military Hospital, Pretoria, followed by community service in Knysna in 2008.

His aim has been to pursue a career in surgery and for that reason he spent another year at Knysna provincial hospital as a general medical officer during 2009 and another two and a half years at George Provincial hospital as a general surgical medical officer where he gained further extensive surgical experience.

Dr DJ de Villiers’ formal surgery training, commenced mid 2012 at Groote Schuur Hospital, in the post of registrar in general surgery. He successfully completed his final exam in May 2016 and was awarded the Douglas medal for best surgical candidate.

Since January 2016, he has been working as a junior consultant in the Acute Care Surgery unit at Groote Schuur Hospital, fine tuning his general surgical skills in a tertiary, academic environment.

He sees himself as a true general surgeon and he has a passion for his job as a surgeon, as well as working with people.
